The Commissionerate police on Tuesday arrested a person for allegedly posing as an Income Tax officer and extort money from a businessman.
The accused was identified as Umakanta Rout (59).As per the complaint lodged by the businessman Debasish Patnaik, Rout identified himself as an IT officer and demanded Rs 10,000 not to raid his firm.
He warned Patnaik of dire consequences if he does not pay him the money. Based on the complaint, the Kharvel Nagar police registered a case under Sections 294, 506, 507, 419 and 387 of IPC and arrested Rout. Later, he was forwarded to court.
During his interrogation, it was ascertained that he was involved in similar cases earlier in the city and arrested a number of times.
