The Commissionerate Police on Thursday arrested a man for throwing acid at seven members of his family, including four children and two women, at the Dhirikuti slum under the Saheed Nagar police station over a family dispute.

Accused Sura Behera threw acid following an altercation with his wife.

Trouble began when Sura’s wife asked him to take their daughter to a hospital as she was ill. A reluctant Behera in a fit of rage threw acid, as a result of which seven members of the family sustained burn injuries. The injured were four girl children, two women and a man.

The injured persons were rushed to the Capital Hospital.

According to sources, the accused is an auto-rickshaw driver and hails from Nayagarh district.

Family dispute was suspected to be behind the heinous crime as Behera allegedly has extramarital affairs. He has affairs with his sister-in-law and another woman residing in the slum, sources said.

The accused had bought the banned acid from a outlet at Rasulgarh Square. Police are likely to take action against the outlet for selling the acid violating the guidelines set by the Supreme Court.
