A man allegedly attacked his sister-in-law with knife in the Kankadahada area of Dhenkanal district on Tuesday, leaving her critically injured, after she rejected his marriage proposal.

According to police sources, Mamina (25) of Kantamala village had married Raghunath Nayak of Tarajanga village three years ago. Raghunath died in a road accident a year after the marriage, following which she was staying at her father’s house.

A few days ago, Sipu Nayak, Mamina’s brother-in-law, had asked her to marry him, to which she did not agree. In a fit of rage, Sipu attacked Mamina with a knife on Tuesday morning, as a result of which she sustained grievous injuries on her back, legs and thighs.

While she was rescued and admitted to the Kamakhyanagar hospital, the accused was detained by police for questioning.
