A 40-year-old man was killed as a wall of his house was pushed over by an elephant under the Bisra forest range under the Rourkela forest division late on Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Umesh Munda.

Sources said a herd of three elephants entered into the Budhikani village and went on a rampage. Villagers ran for safety to save themselves from the jumbo attack.

Due to rampage by pachyderms, one of the house walls collapsed and Munda died coming under it.

On being informed by villagers, a team of forest officials reached the spot and sent the body for post mortem on Tuesday.

Rourkela Assistant Conservator of Forest Dilip Sahoo said, “We have handed over the dead body to his family members after postmortem and have also paid an amount of Rs 20,000 to the family members of the victim.”

The remaining amount of Rs 3.8 lakhs would be paid after completion of the formalities, Sahoo added.
