Even as stringent laws are in force against domestic violence, a man murdered his wife allegedly over dowry in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday night.
The incident was reported from Mahuldiha village under the Kaptipada police limits in the Udala area.
The deceased was identified as Subhadra Mukherjee (20), wife of Biswajeet Mukherjee (32). According to reports, Subhadra was beaten to death by her husband with a shock absorber of an auto rickshaw.
Sources said Biswajeet was suffering from some sort of mental abnormality and was taking medicines for it. He attacked his wife at around 1 am hitting her with the mechanical device on her head. The victim died on the spot.
The family members captured him and handed him over to the police.
The couple has a seven-year-old daughter. Subhadra’s family members alleged that she was killed for dowry.
Reports said that Biswajeet had earlier been rescued by Fire Services personnel from a tree. A week ago, he had climbed a 30-feet high tree due to abnormality. He was taken to a psychiatric for treatment on Friday.
Even after he took medicines as prescribed by the doctor, he became violent on Saturday night and killed his wife.
