A middle-aged man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping his father in a bid to extort money from the latter on Saturday under the Betanati police station in Mayurbhanj district. Abani Behera was arrested along with two of his accomplices, Ajay and Himanshu, for kidnapping Bhagabata Behera, a retired schoolteacher.
The matter came to light when the Betanati police started investigation after Abani Behera lodged a complaint alleging that his father had been missing since October 10.
However, investigations revealed that the kidnap was done at the behest of Abani for money. "During probe, we found that Abani along with two of his friends kidnapped his father for money. We have arrested the trio," said Betanati police station IIC Minati Biswal.
The trio was arrested when they were trying to exchange a cheque of Rs 10 lakh in a bank. They managed to take the signature of Bhagbat Behera when the latter was in their custody, sources said.
Four mobile phones and four debit cards were seized from their possession.
According to sources, Abani was unhappy with his father as the latter gives money "only to his two daughters".
