A male baby elephant died after being hit by a train near Panimunda under the Biswanathpur Forest Range in Kalahandi district in the wee hours of Friday.

According to sources, the incident took place when an elephant herd was on its way to a paddy field by crossing a railway track in the area.

The Alleppey-Dhanbad train ploughed into the herd causing the death of the pachyderm on the spot. The age of the tusker was around five years. On November 7, an elephant had been wounded after being hit by a moving train at the Gurudijhatia level-crossing near Khuntuni in Cuttack district.

The herd of elephants was crossing the railway tracks near the level crossing while the train rammed into it, leaving one jumbo injured. The injured jumbo ran away into the forest just after the mishap and remains untraced.
