Mahila sangathan decries Govt inaction on crime against women

Concerned over the rising atrocities against women and the recent murder of a college girl in Jajpur district, activists of the All India Mahila Sanskrutika Sangathan (AIMSS) on Saturday staged a demonstration in front of the State Secretariat here and demanded immediate measures to check the crimes against women.

“Atrocities against women and problems concerning women are on the rise. Recently, miscreants killed one Biswakalpita of Nipapani village under the Tamaka police station in Jajpur district. The police are still clueless about the miscreants,” said AIMSS president Binapani Das.

“We are organising the rally on the issues affecting women, liquor sale, female foeticide and women trafficking and urge the State Government to ensure arrest of the culprits in the Biswakalpita murder case soon,” added Das.

The women's body also submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging him to put a check on nudity and vulgarity in the media, closure of liquor shops across the State, measures against female foeticide and women trafficking. They also sought social security for women and exemplary punishment for those found guilty of crimes against them.

"Women, instead of getting their due honour and equal rights, are still considered as second class citizens and treated as commodities. But to our utter surprise, we feel the Government has no attention for these issues," said AIMSS vice-president Chhabi Mohanty.
