A scuffle erupted between activists of the Mahila Congress and security personnel at Mahatma Gandhi Marg here on Tuesday when a large number of women tried to march towards the State Assembly breaking the security barricade.
Demanding total prohibition, the activists led by PCC president Prasad Harichandan, Mahila Congress president Sasmita Behera and party general secretary Sulochana Das led a march from the Congress Bhawan.
“The Government should not focus on the revenue generated from liquor; rather, it must focus on our socioeconomic and health issues of people,” said the PCC president
The Mahila Congress president said, “liquor consumption is one of the main reasons behind the rise in various crimes and several antisocial activities in the State.” She urged the Government to ban manufacturing and sale of liquor in the State in a phased manner.
Mahila Congress general secretary Das warned that the party would continue the agitation unless and until the Government declares the State liquor-free.
