Mahalakshmi breaks chariot out of anger

Published on:

The preparation for the Bahuda (return Car Festival) began on Friday after Mahalakshmi, the consort of lord Jagannath who was isolated by the lords for the pleasure ride to their aunt’s house at the Gundicha temple during the Rath Yatra, expressed her anger by breaking the Nandighosh chariot.

She came to the chariot parking place riding a decorated palanquin in the dead night of Thursday and in anger broke one piece of wood from the Nandighosh Rath giving a signal to the lord to return home early.

On the Friday, chariots were pulled back about 500 meters along the Badadanda towards the Badasankha and then giving a south turn were again veered to the Nakachanadwar of the Gundicha Temple. This turn of the chariots is popularly called as Dakshinimoda.

As per the tradition, at about 3.30 pm, the Darpadalan Rath of Maa Subhadra was pulled first by hundreds of policemen and devotees followed by the Taladhwaj Rath of lord Balabhaddra.

On the Saturday the Nandighosh Rath of lord Jagannath would be pulled.

The Trinity along with lord Sudarshan, Ramakrushna and Madanmohan would board the chariots and would return to the main temple in the manner and style they came during the Rath Yatra.

The devotees in large numbers are visiting every day at the Gundicha Temple to offer prayers.

As per a belief, those who offer prayers to the deities in the Adap Mandap of the Gundicha Temple atop the Ratnasimhasan escape from the cycle of births.

Thus there is big rush in the temple every day and the devotees are found taking Mahaprasad gleefully inside the temple complex.
