Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao accompanied by GMR Group chairman GM Rao visited the group's CSR arm GMR Varalakshmi Foundation at Rajam on Saturday.

The Governor took a tour to GMRIT Campus, GMR Varalakshami CARE Hospital and Vocational Training Institute. He spent time with the underprivileged gifted children and later addressed over 4,000 students of GMR Institute of Technology and other institutes.

Governor highly lauded GMR Group for its keen endeavor to develop social infrastructure and enhance the quality of life of communities around the locations.

Addressing the gathering, Rao said, “The GMR Group believes Corporates have a special and continuing responsibility towards the society. Keeping this in view, GMRVF was set up as a not-for-profit company over a dozen years ago and has its own professional staff drawn from top academic institutions.”

The Foundation is actively involved in running 12 state-of-the-art vocational training institutes which have provided trainings to about 40,000 under-privileged youth so far and close to 80 per cent of them have been settled and are earning their livelihoods through the technical skills they have learnt, he said. The foundation also runs hospitals in under-served areas. Mobile medical units are also part of the initiative for providing better and proficient treatment to the rural areas, Rao said.
