lower court judges stay in rented houses

Published on:

Many judges appointed at lower courts in the State have reportedly been staying in rented houses due to dearth of Government quarters.

The major problem these judges are facing is that house owners and neighbours are interfering into the family life.

The issue was raised at the conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices held recently in New Delhi.

According to information, there are only 352 Government quarters against 716 sanction posts in the State. Besides, eight quarters are under construction now. And condition of most of the existing quarters is bad due to lack of proper maintenance.

Although, the General Administration (GA) Department is allotting quarters to judges amidst shortage of Government quarters, but several lower court judges are yet to get the same. Similarly, most of the judges had not got Government vehicles yet.

The security of the rented house staying judges is also a matter of great concern, especially in the Maoist-infested districts.  Out of 716 sanctioned judge posts in the subordinate courts, 120 posts were lying vacant by May this year.
