Low pressure to drag monsoon into State

Published on:

A low pressure is likely to form over north Bay of Bengal and its adjoining area by June 11. Under its influence, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance to a few places in Odisha in the next two to three days.

Several places in interior and coastal Odisha are likely to witness rains or thundershowers from Thursday under the impact of the fresh phenomenon, the Regional Centre of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) here said on Wednesday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in parts of the State between June 10 and 14. The coastal areas would experience wind with speeds of 40-50 kmph.

The fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea during the period as the sea condition will be phenomenal, said IMD Regional Director HR Biswas.

The weather department also predicted rains accompanied by lightning in several places of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Mayurbhanj and Nuapada districts. If favourable conditions persist, the low pressure area would intensify into a depression and then deep depression before converting into a cyclonic storm, the IMD said.
