A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal (BoB) and the system is likely to intensify into a depression around October 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

“Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over southeast BoB, a low-pressure area has formed over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. It is likely to intensify further into a depression over west-central BoB around October 23,” the IMD said.

Rainfall may play spoilsport for Durga Puja festivities in the State in view of the forecasted depression.

The Regional Office of the IMD here has predicted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers for several districts of the State on October 23. It has also predicted that rainfall would increase in the coastal Odisha during the subsequent two days.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at a few places in the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapada and at one or two places in the rest of districts of coastal Odisha and Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Angul, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput on October 23,  said the weather office.
