The State recorded only 3.3 per cent conviction rate in the cases relating to people belonging to SC category and 5.7 per cent in cases relating to the ST Category in 2016.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik informed this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJP MlA Dilip Ray on Monday.
While Ray had wanted to know the reasons behind low conviction rates, the Chief Minister said hostile witnessing, compromise between parties and delay in judicial process are main causes of low conviction rates.
Criminal statistics has not been published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2017, informed the Chief Minister.
