Lockdowns: Blind S'pur couple lose livelihood

Published on:

Akrur Jani and Gita Jani are blind since birth. The couple which tied the nuptial knot years back led a life with dignity and self-sufficiency without depending on others.

Though they are residents of Bargarh district, but they stayed in Kamalibazar of Sambalpur town with a small unit of Phenyl manufacturing. They prepared phenyl and sold in local market. Akrur, with God gifted strength, sold phenyl in markets.

But the Covid 19 lockdown thereafter had a topsy-turvy effect on their livelihood. Akrur couldn’t go out to sale phenyl and they managed with difficulty for a few months. But this couldn’t be possible for long.

So this couple decided to return to their village Gaisilet as their only source of livelihood in Sambalpur couldn’t even feed them a square meal.

The office bearers of Swichha, an NGO, came to know about the couple and tried to help them. “We arranged a taxi for the couple so that they can reach home safely. At the same time, we also gave them some financial help so that they will not face problem in their village for the initial days,” said Dillip Panda of Swaichha.

All other members of the organisation also helped this couple, Panda informed.
