Locals oppose land acquisition; 11 detained

Tension prevailed at Dandiapali village in Sundargarh district as the locals, who are to be hit by the second bridge over the Brahmani river, disrupted the land acquisition process for the project on Saturday.

Sources said land acquisition work for construction of an approach road of the second bridge over the Brahmani river was underway at Dandiapali in the morning. Earlier, compensation was given to locals to be affected by the project. But the residents opposed the land acquisition process demanding more compensation.

Later, police detained 11 activists from the spot. Besides, seven platoons of police force were deployed to avoid any further law and order situation in the area. The acquisition work later resumed in presence of the District Magistrate.

In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced construction of the bridge in the Steel City while foundation stone for the project was laid on 2017. Later, Rourkela MLA Dilip Ray resigned from the BJP alleging delay in the project’s construction.
