The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital (IMS&SH), run by the SOA University here, will be undertaking liver transplantation within a year.

This was announced at the launching of the Centre of Excellence for Gastrointestinal, liver and Pancreatobiliary Sciences by the institute here on Saturday. The Centre of Excellence was inaugurated by Health Minister Dr Damodar Rout.

The state-of-the-art advanced centre would offer comprehensive treatment and care under one roof for gastrointestinal, biliary,  pancreatic and liver diseases unmatched in Eastern India, Associate Professor and head of the centre Dr Manoj Kumar Sahu said.

Hospital Dean Prof DK Ray said the medical college was set to start a DM course in gastroenterology soon while announcing that liver transplantation would be taken up within a year.

Minister Dr Rout said the State Government plans to add 300 more seats in the three medical college hospitals run by it while 13 more medical colleges, being promoted by private management, are in the pipeline. There are four private medical colleges in the State at present.

He said that though killer diseases like cholera, small pox and tuberculosis are no more considered big concerns, non-communicable killer diseases have appeared due to a variety of reasons including urbanisation, industrialisation and change in lifestyle.

India is set to account for 60 per cent of the world’s coronary diseases by 2015 but a real matter of concern is that 50 to 60 per cent of the people to be affected would be below 50 years of age. Similarly, the country would become the diabetes capital of the world by 2020, Dr Rout said.

SOA University Vice-Chancellor Prof RP Mohanty presided over the function.
