A jail inmate undergoing life term here after being convicted has sought permission for euthanasia pleading him as innocent.

Pradip Mediniray was convicted by a Sessions Court here in 2013 as he was found guilty in a case of a rape and murder of a Class-IX student, a resident of Kadamsahi of Nilgiri on June 17, 1995.

He had been arrested after three days of the incident along with two others, Ramesh Chadra Rana and Sanatan Behera.

During the period of his trial, Mediniray had gone on parole, but he absconded for about 12 years. While he was arrested  by the Baleswar Police from Jajpur on November 4, 2009, the Sessions Court trying him under Sections 376(g), 377, 302 and 34 of IPC awarded him life term on June 27, 2013.

While co-accused Behera was acquitted, Rana was awarded term which he is undergoing along with Mediniray.

However, Mediniray pleading him as innocent demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter. When his request was not accepted, he has sought permission for euthanasia and is stated to have written letters in this regard to the State High Court, the Supreme Court, the Human Rights Commission and other legal forums.

legal and human rights activist Nishikanta Mishra, after meeting Mediniray at the Baleswar Jail on Tuesday, said he would seek legal recourse in the High Court for a CBI inquiry into the matter as the convict feels that he was falsely implicated in the case and the investigation was not made properly by

the police.
