lend more to farming, cottage industry, banks told

The State Government has asked the banks to grant more loans to the agriculture sector and the cottage industry. State Finance Minister Prasanna Acharya suggested this at a State-level Bankers’ Committee (SlBC) meeting here on Wednesday.

The Minister suggested the banks to open more branches in rural areas and provide agriculture insurance to the stakeholders in right time. Opening of more branches in the rural areas would give the common people the opportunity to deposit their money safely and remain unaffected by the fraudulent chit fund firms, he added.

Acharya said the commercial banks should invest more for the financial growth of the State. The banks should invest more on the basis of their benefit and collection of money from the State, he asserted.

like agriculture, the Minister said the cottage industry is providing more employment and livelihood for the people of the State. So the banks should increase the investment amount on the welfare projects initiated by the State and the Central Government for the development of handloom sector and for the welfare of the weavers, he opined.

“We want the banks to invest more in agriculture sector and open more rural branches to protect the common people from the clutches of fraudulent chit fund companies functioning in the State,” said the Minister, adding, “The banks have given their consent to open more branches in the State.”
