The State Government on Monday came up with a new scheme ‘Ujjala’, under which lED bulb is distributed to electricity consumers. Energy Minister Pranab Prakash Das launched the programme at a special function held here.

Each consumer will get lED bulb of 9 watt at Rs85, each. While domestic consumers will be given 10 bulbs, business institutions will get 20-50 bulbs with three years guarantee. The consumers can avail the bulbs from electricity bill collection centres or from some special counters to be opened at each sub-division level after furnishing their ID proof and last electricity bill. Around 1,000-1,200 MW power can be saved if everyone use the bulb, said the Minister at the launching ceremony.

“We have planned to distribute around six crore bulbs for the 60 lakh consumers in the State. While 4,000 MW power is consumed during the evening, it will come down to 3,700-3,600 MW after use of the bulb”, said the Minister.

During peak hour, electricity is purchased at Rs6-Rs7 per unit. This would also decrease, resulting which the consumers can save Rs300- Rs350 crore. It is planned that the schemes would first be implemented at all Government offices that would take two to three months, he added.
