The lawyers of Puri Bar Association have resolved to continue their ongoing stir till the Superintendent of Police was transferred, alleging deteriorating law and order situation in Puri.
Bar Association president Bijay Mishra, secretary Jayashanker Pattnaik along with steering committee members, had met the Director General of Police on the Friday and
appraised him of the situation and demanded transfer of the SP.
The DGP informed them that he would observe the situation for a month and then he would take a decision. The lawyers, peeved over the attitude of DGP, unanimously resolved in their general body meeting on
Wednesday to continue the agitation. They also decided to send a delegation to meet the Chief Minister in this regard.
The lawyers are agitating over the lawlessness in the tourist cum pilgrim city for a fortnight.
Earlier Revenue Minister Maheswar Mohanty who is also a life member of the Bar has unsuccessfully tried to resolve the issue. The lawyers cited that hooligans were ruling over the city while police were not idle. There were numerous attacks on tourists and pilgrims while residents were victims of ransom demands.
Devotees in the temple were not spared by the unscrupulous elements. Theft of two wheelers and cars is rampant. Chain snatching, gambling and drug related cases were increasing day by day.
Scores of bomb hurling cases besides murder were a frequent happening.
Even recently anti social elements had attacked the SP residence in retaliation to raid on their den. Nobody is secured in the city, the lawyers informed the Government and demanded shifting of the SP at the earliest.
