'lawyer's real challenge is in bar'

Though lawyers graduating from various law schools and universities are being lured by lucrative offers from various corporate houses, the challenge of being a lawyer lies in the bar.

This was observed by eminent personalities from the legal world while addressing students of law at the SOA University here on Thursday.

“There was a time when students joined law course as a matter of compulsion as they could not get into a better course, but today bright young people are joining law schools by choice,” Justice AS Naidu, former judge of Odisha High Court said at the inaugural function of a four-day 2nd All India law School Meet being held at the SOA National Institute of law.

The introduction of the five-year integrated law course has ushered in a sea change in the field of legal education, Justice Naidu said, adding that though he worked as a HC judge he always treasures his experience as a member of the bar for 30 years.

Prof Srikrishna Deva Rao, Vice-Chancellor of National law University, Odisha, Cuttack said, “Arguing a case before a judge and persuading him to give a verdict in your favour gives the student of law the most satisfaction. You may get a fat pay packet in a corporate job, but it will not give you the satisfaction of a practising lawyer.”
