'law students have range of career options'

Students opting for law course have a wide range of exciting career options before them as the legal profession has encompassed virtually every field of activity, Justice Indrajit Mohanty of Odisha High Court said here on Wednesday.

“Today there is no area where lawyers are not required. Anything you do needs the compliance of law,” he said, addressing an orientation programme organised for the new batch of law students at the SOA University.

There are many choices, including academics, which can be a fantastic career option for law students, he said.    “It is not necessary that you should be from a family of lawyers. First generation lawyers are doing very well,” Justice Mohanty observed.

He urged law students to challenge themselves and strive to acquire as much knowledge as they could. He said the profession of law is a passion.

Odisha State Bar Council Chairman Manas Ranjan Mohapatra wanted to know from the students as to whether their decision to study law is their own or imposed on them by others. He said they would have to labour hard, be patient and energetic to be good legal practitioners.

He said that though around 50,000 lawyers have enrolled as legal practitioners in the State, hardly 20,000 of them were active in the field.
