The Biju Patnaik International Airport is all set to scare away the birds with laser guns. This move by Airport Authority of India (AAI) has come about keeping in view the repeated sighting of birds and bird hit incidents at the airport. “It is decided to have laser guns. The guns will let out a green beam which will scare birds and keep away from airport premises,” said Biju Patnaik International Airport Director Sharad Kumar.
Sources said the gun will be useful in the morning and evening when bird activity is at its peak. Apart from the new system, the Airport authorities have decided to continue with the traditional method of scaring away the birds using crackers and other techniques approved by the AAI, sources added. While bird-hit cases are rampant at the airport and caused regular disruption of flights, around 12 cases of bird hits were reported at the city airport in 2010.
