Even though the Gopalpur Port has been re-commissioned as an all-weather berthing port since December last, cargo handling is being operated in one berth only. Two months after Srilankan cargo ship “MV SH Grace” berthed at the port, a large Bangladeshi ship has reached the port from Chittagong. With this six cargo ships have berthed in the port during the last three months from December 2015 to February 2016. A large number of people thronged the port site on Thursday to see the Bangladeshi ship, which 5 km from the sea coast. After uploading 50,000 tonnes of blast furnace slugs, the ship will proceed to Chittagong. On January 17, a train loaded with blast furnace slugs had reached the Gopalpur port. The slugs were unloaded with the help of 500 women labourers. Similarly, on December 12, the Sri lankan ship “MV SH Grace” took 20,000 tonnes of illuminates and proceeded towards China. This was followed by three more cargo ships berthed at the port on December 25, January 5 and February 12, respectively. The Gopalpur Ports limited has set a target to complete construction of two more berths by December 2016. By December next year, the port is expected to have cargo ship handling capacity of around 80,000 dead weight tonnage (DWT), GPl sources said. The target of GPl is to have 19 berths in the port in future.
