Manash Swain (32), a native of Dwarabatipur of Ghantikhal GP under Athagarh block, who was working as a labourer in the Aarti Steel and Power at Ghantikhal for a long period, died on Saturday morning in a mishap that occurred in the company premises on Friday.
While a truck was unloading hard cokes in the company premises on Friday, Manash was giving instructions to the driver. Meanwhile, due to slip of break the truck ran over Manash. The company authorities rushed him to a hospital at Cuttack, where he died on Saturday morning.
As this information spread in his village, villagers staged a dharna before the company's main gate demanding compensation to Manash’s family. A platoon of police force was deployed apprehending any untoward incident. The Athagarh Tehsildar, the Choudwar SDPO, the local Sarpanch, the PS Member, family members of the deceased and villagers discussed the matter.
The company management agreed to pay Rs 8 lakh to the family as compensation and additionally Rs 3 lakh for marriage of Manash’s two daughters besides a permanent job in the company to one the family. This apart, instantly, Rs 40,000 was given by the company for the funeral rites of the deceased.
