The six-hour Mayurbhanj Bandh observed by the Kudumi Sena to press for awarding of ST status to Kudumis/Mohants passed off peacefully on Monday.
The bandh was observed from 6 am till 12 noon when Government offices, shops, business establishments and banks remained closed. Besides, vehicular movement was disrupted as activists blocked the roads during the bandh. Essential services, however, were excluded from the purview of the bandh.
According to the Kudumi Sena, Kudumis/Mohantas were recognized as ST during pre-Independence days, and, hence, there is no newness in their demand. Earlier on Sunday evening, the Kudumi Sena’s women’s wing had organised a impressive torch procession in support of the bandh.
