Koraput Childline officials with support of district administration and police personnel on Saturday prevented a minor girl from marrying to a 22-year-old youth at Nuagaon village under the Semiliguda police limits.
According to sources, the team led by IIC Niramal Mahapatra, acting on a tipoff, reached the Bairagi mutt under Jeypore block and
asked parents not to go ahead with marriage rituals. A palpable tension prevailed for some time due to the team’s intervention.
While the girl’s parent couldn’t supply any document in support of her age, the team members explained to both the sides that the law doesn’t permit for the marriage of a minor girl and hence they have to stop the marriage.
Then the parents of both the bride and groom made a promise in written that they would not go for the wedding until she reaches minimum marriageable age, informed CWC member Purnima Dash.
