Women in Jamadhar panchayat took to the streets protesting against the sudden hike in alcohol consumption due to the latest two liquor counters in the area.
The agitators complained that ever since the duo liquor counters opened, the locality has lost its peace. The women believe that the convenience of acquiring alcohol has made the male members spend all their earnings there. Also, the male members of the family create disturbance in an inebriated condition and assault their wives if they protest against their drinking. Even college going youths indulge in such activities. As the liquor counters are located at roadside, students and women have to put up with the nuisance of the drunkards.
Besides, with the increasing liquor consumption, the social relationships have deteriorated along with the economic condition of the people. “If the district administration and the Excise Department do not shift the liquor shops, we will have to take law into our own hands.” said a protesting woman.
