The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the Kendrapada District Education Officer (DEO) to take appropriate action against Gana Sikhayatri Sumitra Champatiray of the Krushnapriyapur Project Primary School for punishing a Class II girl student way back on August 24, 2012.

Notably, Champatiray had beaten one Kabita Mandal (7) of Class II of her school with a broom she used as a mat for cleaning the floor of her of the classroom. Even, it was alleged that the lady teacher had put her feet on Kabita’s chest as a way of corporal punishment.

Kabita’s father Sukumar Mandal had then lodged an FIR against the errant woman teacher in the Rajnagar police station. As the police took no action, Sukumar filed a petition with the OHRC on October 5 that year seeking action against the teacher.

Subsequently, the OHRC directed the Kendrapara SP and DEO to conduct an inquiry in the alleged matter and submit a report. After receiving reports, the OHRC issued an order letter to the DEO for action against the teacher on November 23, 2013. But surprisingly, the order letter reached Kendrapada nearly a year after on November 21, 2014.When contacted, DEO Markat Keshari Ray said he received the OHRC order on Wednesday and would take action against the errant teacher soon.
