Police on Friday arrested Majhia alias Gouranga Das on the charge of his involvement in Sujata Bairagi rape and burn case here.
DHRPC DSP Santanu Padhi, who is the investigative officer of the case, said the victim Dalit girl during her dying declaration had stated in presence of police, doctors and a magistrate that Majhia was involved in the crime.However, the FIR lodged in the case did not mention Majhia’s name. Majhia was arrested on the basis of the statement of the rape and burn victim, but how he is to be prosecuted without solid proof against him is a matter of challenge for the police, which are already in the job of making a thorough probe into the case.
The police were also tightlipped as regards the Sections under which Majhia was arrested. If reliable sources are to be believed, Majhia was not present in the village on the day (July 28) the crime took place. On the contrary, he was at his work place at a Bhubaneswar-based construction company.
Meanwhile, a police team was sent to Bhubaneswar to conduct an inquiry on Thursday. Majhia was to be produced before a local court on Saturday.
