The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a case on the alleged custodial death of Jairam Rout in Kendrapada on occurred on March 17.

Rights campaigner Radhakanta Tripathy moved petition twice before the NHRC over the same issue once on March 21 and 23 demanding immediate action.

On March 17, Jairam Rout, a resident of Rajpur (Balichandrapur) under the Rajnagar police limits died just after his release.

“The post mortem report if analysed properly would expose how the poor inmates are treated brutally by the authorities. On one hand, Jairam became a victim as he could not follow the provisions due to poverty whereas in other side he has been subjected to torture and finally succumbed to death. This amounts to serious violation of human rights,” Tripathy alleged in his petition.

The petitioner requested the commission to direct the IG (Prisons) to inquire the whole incident and to take action against the errant officials and pay compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of the deceased.
