The Derabish police on Wednesday arrested Sasmita Moharana of Chasakhanada village in Kendrapada district on the charge of killing her two-and-a-half-month-old nephew a week ago. Sasmita was produced in the court and later sent to jail custody, informed Derabish PS IIC Niranjan Sabar.
Two others, including the deceased child’s father and another elder mother, were released on PR (personal recognizance) bond from the Derabish police station in a dowry related case registered against them.
It may be noted that the deceased child Gajendra’s mother Manjulata Sahu had in her FIR alleged that when she was preparing breakfast on Thursday morning, her husband Nrushingha Sahu and two elder sister-in-laws, Sasmita and Subashini, were in the other room where her child was sleeping under a mosquito net.
Around half-an-hour later when Nrushingha went to agriculture field, Sasmita came to the kitchen room and said that her son was missing. Then, Manjulata and the two sister-in-laws searched the child and found him drowned in a bucket of water. Preliminary inquiry revealed that Nrushingha and Sasmita had illicit relationship. Sasmita first strangulated the child to death and then dipped it in the water-full bucket, stated the IIC.
