With an aim to provide opportunities to SC and ST children in rural areas to avail quality education and facilities provided in public schools, the Koraput district administration has decided to enrol at least 100 students belonging to these categories in pubic schools under the Urban Education Programme of the State Government.

Under the initiative, SC and ST students will be enrolled in Class-I at select public schools in urban areas of the district in November first week for the current academic session.

All expenses, including school fees, tuition and library charges and miscellaneous fees will be borne by the State Government and paid to the school on yearly basis.

“Though we have planned to enrol 100 students but a few more could also be accommodated under the programme. The administration will provide hostel facilities to the students and ferry them to the respective schools. Special coaching classes will also be given,” said Koraput Collector Jaya Kumar V.

The administration has selected total 12 public schools at Koraput, Jeypore, Semiliguda and Kotpad in the district for the project.

While 70 per cent students would be from ST category, rest would be from SC category. In each category, 50 per cent seats would be reserved for girls, said District Welfare Officer Trinath Rao.
