A peon of RWSS Division, Koraput was arrested for receiving bribe on behalf of the Executive Engineer.
According to sources, Laxman Kumar Behera, I/c Executive Engineer, RWS & S Division, Koraput had demand of Rs 50,000 for release of second RA bill of Rs 10,53,981 from complainant Tankadhar Harijan, contractor, with threat not to release further bill in respect of execution of an overhead tank at Sargiguda under Kundura Block.
The trap was laid on Thursday. Accused Behera directed peon Satyaban Mallick to receive the bribe money from Harijan. Accordingly, peon Mallick asked the complainant to keep the bribe money inside his motor cycle basket.
The complainant kept the bribe money inside the basket.
Then the peon locked the basket of his motor cycle and when he was about to leave the spot, he was caught by the officers of Koraput Vigilance.
Mallick was arrested and forwarded to the court. Engineer Behera has since absconded.
