Koraput Municipality chairman resigns

BJD leader and Chairman of Koraput Municipality Biswabhusan Patnaik resigned from his post on Monday after being accused of misbehaving with a woman Councillor belonging to the Congress.

Patnaik submitted his resignation letter to the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) in the presence of the BJD district president. Patnaik also sent his resignation letter to BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

“I decided to resign from the post of chairman for the sake of the reputation of my party following an allegation of misbehaviour brought against me by woman councillor of Ward-13,” Patnaik told mediapersons here.

He, however, claimed that the allegation against him is false and demanded a probe into it to ascertain the truth.

Biju Yuva Janata Dal State general secretary Ishwar Chandra Panigrahi said his party, at a meeting here on Sunday, had taken a decision to ask the Municipality Chairman to resign from his post to pave way for an impartial probe into the allegation levelled against him by the woman councillor.

“We will have another meeting after the investigation is completed and take a decision as per the directive of the party high command,” Panigrahi informed.

Meanwhile, the District Congress Committee (DCC), which had called a bandh in Koraput town on Monday to protest police inaction in arresting Biswabhusan Patnaik, withdrew its decision after his resignation.

DCC president Meenakshi Bahinipati and Koraput MlA Krushna Chandra Sagaria

had alleged that police are deliberately not acting in the case despite an FIR being

filed as the accused belongs to the ruling party.
