Koraput doctor donates blood to save patient's life

A doctor turned a true saviour setting an example for others in his profession by donating his blood to a patient here in Koraput district.

Dr Bhupati Bhusan Jena, a medicine specialist at the Jeypore Sub-Divisional Hospital, has won people’s hearts for his humanitarianism towards a poor woman patient. He donated one unit blood to save the patient suffering from acute shortage of hemoglobin.

Mani Golari (27) of Doraguda village under Boipariguda block in the district had been admitted to the hospital on Tuesday in a critical condition. Dr Jena, who was treating her, asked her husband Madan Golari to arrange three units of blood immediately to save the patient. However, after arranging only one unit of blood, Madan expressed his helplessness to arrange another two units for transfusion. The doctor realised that the required blood was not available and he was ready to become a donor and save the patient.

“When the patient was admitted to the hospital, her hemoglobin was only 2.2. She required three units of blood on an emergency basis. Her husband arranged only one unit of blood and expressed his inability to arrange more blood immediately. He said it would take time. I said I would arrange one unit of blood being a donor and you arrange two units. Arranging three units of blood, we made blood transfusion into the patient’s body at night. Now, the condition of the patient is well,” said Dr Jena.

“The doctor donated blood to save my wife realising my condition,” said Madan.

Earlier in March, a similar instance of humanitarianism by a doctor had been reported from Kandhamal district. Dr Yajnadutta Rath became God for a patient when trekked a hill and crossed a river to rescue a woman who was in labour pain on her way to hospital in the forest under Tumudibandha block.

Yet another doctor, Omkar Hota, had also hit headlines in November last year for carrying a tribal woman, who was bleeding after delivering a child, on his shoulders for 10 km to a Public Health Centre (PHC) at Paplur of Malkangiri district.
