After two among seven admitted at SCB die

The death toll in Keonjhar contaminated food consumption incident mounted to three on Tuesday when two persons died while undergoing treatment here at the SCB Medical College Hospital on Tuesday.

While one had died at a Keonjhar hospital on Monday, five others are still undergoing treatment at the SCB in critical condition. SCB sources here said the conditions of the patients are stable and they are under round-the-clock observation.

Reports reaching here said that a peasant family of Dalimbapur village under Keonjhar block along with five other farm labourers of a nearby village had taken rice and dalma (a mixture of dal and vegetables) on Sunday evening.

It was around midnight one Saraswati Dehury (27) started vomiting and soon others also complained of vomiting tendency. By Monday morning, all the eight, who had consumed the food stuff, were vomiting profusely complaining of giddiness.

Family head Sanatan Mahanta soon brought all the ailing persons to the Keonjhar district headquarters hospital, where the doctors declared Saraswati as brought dead. Since the conditions of others were deteriorating fast, the doctors referred the patients to the SCB.

But by the time the patients reached here, the conditions of Srimati Dehury (29) and Kandi Dehury (26) had further aggravated and they died while undergoing treatment here, sources said. Doctors here are unable to draw any conclusive opinion for the mishap but suggest that either the food was stale or contaminated by some poisonous insect.
