KIMS docs remove 5-ft bamboo pole from patient

Doctors at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here have saved a 40-year-old after he suffered a fatal injury inflicted by a fall that caused a five-foot-long bamboo pole piercing him through his chest.

Tapan Parida of Talajanga under Chandanpur block in Puri district had been rushed to the hospital around midnight on October 28. His life hung in the balance as the bamboo pole went through his chest and emerged from the back side above his neck. He was unable to move one of his hands.

A six-member surgical team led by Dr Pran Singh Pujari operated on him for nearly four hours using complex methods in modern surgery to remove the pole.

Family members said the bamboo fencing gave in when Tapan was inspecting the water level near the siphon along his paddy field. He suddenly fell on a bamboo underneath, about 15 feet down his field.

Dr Pujari said the entire process for Tapan to get cured would take around three to six months.

KIIT, KISS & KIMS founder Dr Achyuta Samanta thanked Dr Pujari and his team and wished the patient's speedy recovery.
