The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday expressed serious concern over the high rate of malnutrition among children in the State and maintained that it was indicative of the Anganwadi Centres not being managed properly.
Speaking to reporters at the conclusion of the commission’s camp sitting, NHRC member SC Sinha said, “The high number of malnutrition cases, poor quality health service, awful state of anganwadi centres, and alleged starvation deaths are some of the major concern areas for the NHRC.”
“We have made several recommendations to the Government on the issues of improvement in mid-day meal for children, improvement of public health centres, inadequate doctors in rural pockets, implementation of MGNREGA and issue of migrant labourers,” said Sinha.
Sinha said the NHRC often conducts surprise checks through its own organisational network and gets feedback on the functioning of welfare programmes of the Government. He said the commission would like to monitor social welfare schemes being implemented by the State Government.
