One Md Badrujdoza of Pipili Haatsahi in Puri district, who allegedly ‘kidnapped’ a two-month-old baby girl from Platform-4 of the Bhubaneswar Railways station on March 8, handed over the baby to Government Railways Police (GRP) on Wednesday.

“We have detained Badrujdoza to ascertain why he had kidnapped the baby,” said Bhubaneswar GRP Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) RN Mohapatra, suspecting that he might have taken the baby taking advantage of her mother Anita Rathod’s absence.  Anita, who hails from Bijapur of Karnataka, had lodged a complaint in this regard with the GRP on Monday.

“Badrujdoza who had reached Bhubaneswar station on the same day to board a train to Howrah took away the girl on his bicycle kept outside at the station parking,” said Mohapatra.  Quoting Badrujdoza’s statement, the GRP DSP said Badrujdoza returned the baby after noticing the photographs of the girl child in newspapers.

But Badruddoza, a farmer by profession, denied committing the crime. “After seeing the baby crying, I waited for 30 minutes. When nobody paid attention towards her, I decided to take her on humanitarian ground,” he said.
