K'handi med college students' fate decision today

A high-level meeting involving the Centre, Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Odisha Government would be held in New Delhi on Monday to discuss fate of students of the Sardar Rajas Medical College and Hospital, Kalahandi.

Health and Family Welfare Secretary Arti Ahuja would attend the meeting on behalf of the State Government.

On November 3, the Odisha High Court had ordered the Union Government to amicably settle the medicos’ issue of the Jaring-based medical college by discussing it with the Odisha Government and the MCI by November 9.

The Court has also directed the Centre to file an affidavit in this regard in the Court on November 10.

Uncertainty still prevails over the future of the present 124 medicos as the State Government has decided to shut down the college after the MCI withdrew recognition of the medical college due to lack of infrastructure and adequate faculty.

The HC had also earlier directed the State Government to admit the medicos at three Bhubaneswar-based private medical colleges for completion of their courses. On October 8, the State Government had submitted a proposal to the MCI to relocate the students in three private medical colleges.

The MCI, however, wanted to relocate those admitted in the management quota to private colleges and others admitted under Government quota to Government colleges and accordingly submitted an affidavit in the HC stating that the Centre also endorses the proposal.
