Keonjhar mine shut; owner asked to pay damages

The deteriorating health condition of the villagers working in a nearby mine and early death of several youth workers has been a concern in Madranjodi village in Keonjhar district.

It was alleged that about 40 men had passed away due to the dust infection and health hazard created in the mine.

Human Rights Watch, a social forum working for human rights, filed a case at the National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi, a few months back and a case no 4,572 was registered.

After seeking reports from the district administration and other field verification, the NHRC gave a direction to take appropriate action and grant of compensation to the victims.

The widow victims with help of a local social activist filed a case in the labour Commissioner Court.

The mine near the village has stopped operating and the Assistant labour Commissioner has issued orders to pay Rs 46 lakh as compensation to 16 widow victims within a month.
