Kalyan Jewellers 'forced' to defer outlet opening

Following the Kalinga Sena’s threat to protest against Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s scheduled visit here, the proposed inauguration of a jewellery outlet in the city on Friday has been deferred to June 14.

The Kalinga Sena is against Bachchan’s endorsement of Maggi noodles. Bachchan was scheduled to open a showroom of the Kalyan Jewellers at Shahid Nagar here.

Kalyan Jewellers owners had already arrived here to oversee the arrangements for the outlet’s inauguration. But they presumably postponed the gala event in view of the protest against Bachchan’s proposed presence.

Kalinga Sena supremo Hemant Rath on Thursday reiterated his party’s protest against Bachchan’s visit here. “We will not let Bachchan promote any product in Odisha till he tenders an apology for having endorsed Maggi noodles,” Rath said.

Notably, the Kalinga Sena rose to prominence after one of its activists slapped the then India cricket coach Greg Chappell in 2007 for not picking any Odisha player in the Indian team.
