Kalahandi medical students' admission at Burla protested

The students of the VSSIMSAR at Burla are not prepared to accept their counterparts from the Jaring Sardar Raja Medical College, Bhawanipatna. Reason: lack of infrastructure and staff in the college.

“While the present infrastructure is insufficient for the existing students, how can it accommodate students of another college,” asked the students while raising protest against a decision to allow the medical students of Kalahandi to read in Burla.

“The health institute at Burla has neither adequate staff nor infrastructure for the existing students. Hence, addition of student without extra facilities will add to the problem of old students and institution,” they said. The students of the VSSIMSAR also staged dharna in front of the college to show their protest.

As many as 85 first year and 24 second year MBBS students of Jaring Sardar Raja Medical College, Bhawanipatna, as per orders from the Odisha High Court, will take admission in Burla and in MKCG, Brahmapur.

The agitating students alleged that the team members of MCI (Medical Council of India) have already rejected the proposal for increase of seats at Burla when they practically saw the poor infrastructure here. These shortfalls are continuing as on today, they lamented.

When contacted, VSSIMSAR Principal Prof Santosh Behera said that they were yet to get any orders from the Government or the court. “But once we get the court order, we have to accommodate the students at any cost,” Prof Behera said, while admitting that there would be problems for their hostel accommodation and class room adjustment.

But a few senior staff fumed the attitude of the agitating students. “We have applied for increase of seats from 150 to 250. Hence, addition of a few students will not be a major problem,” said a staff member at Burla on the condition of anonymity. “Students must learn to respect judiciary,” he suggested further.
