K Nagar residents demand pucca roads, sewerage system

Even 27 years after its creation, the K-9B locality of the city’s Kalinga Nagar area is yet to see proper roads and a sewerage system.

After many approaches and long wait, locals have again demanded that pucca roads and a good sewerage system be provided to them at the earliest. The locality, which was developed in 1991, now has more than 120 houses and three apartments.

“We have approached the Bhubaneswar Development Authority and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation many times, requesting them to provide us the two basic facilities, pucca roads and sewerage system, but nobody has listened to us,” said Kalinga Nagar K-9B Residents Welfare Association president Surath Kumar Dhal.

Now, the roads have potholes at different points and household wastewaters are flowing on some of the roads due to lack of a sewerage system, he said.

Dharl said though people have built septic tanks behind their houses, still the area becomes a mess during the monsoon due to lack of drainage channels.

He said a private firm had damaged the approach road to the area while constructing a sewerage system for its apartment block. However, the firm stopped the work after residents lodged a complaint with the local police and the BDA, he added.

Association secretary Prabir Mohapatra said the approach road connecting Kalinga Nagar with NH-16 needed the attention of the BMC. “The road is still kutcha. Even movement of a motorbike on the road creates much dust. Plying of heavy vehicles have damaged the road,” he added.

Mohaptra said that the BDA should construct the road now as houses had been built upon the land sold by it in 1991.

A BMC official said a tender has been floated for construction of the approach road and the Odisha Water Supply and Sewerage Board would look into the sewerage work.
