A police official was sent to jail after his bail plea was rejected by a court here on Tuesday in connection with the custodial death of a 25-year-old youth in Kendrapada district.
The then IIC of Mahakalpada police station Shyamaghana Behera surrendered before the SDJM Court and moved his bail petition. But his plea was turned down.
Behera had earlier moved the Orissa High Court for his bail, But the High Court directed him to move his bail plea in the lower court.
Notably, a youth, Abinash Paital, had been arrested in a mobile phone theft case in August last year. However, he was found dead in the police custody under mysterious circumstances a day after his arrest. Behera was suspended by the DGP for dereliction of duty and ordered a Crime Branch probe.
The youth was found hanging from the stairways of a house near the police station. His family members had alleged that he died due to police excesses.
