Jumbos move from Vedavyas, stranded at river

Published on:

Forest officials’ effort to drive away elephants from Vedavyas to the Jharkhand jungle got a jolt on Monday evening as the herd could not cross Shankha river due to flood water.

However, the Vedavyas locals feel safe now as the jumbos have already moved from their area and camped at a distant place, Mandiakudar.Meanwhile, the gates of the Mandira dam have been closed to lessen the water level in the Shankha river. The elephant herd would be driven away through the Mandira Dam to the Bansjore jungle on Tuesday evening, said a forest official.

It is to be noted here that the herd had been staying near the Vedavyas Temple for last two days as villagers of Kuarmunda GP stopped their movement towards the Jharkhan jungle, demanding compensation for the damages they suffered due to elephants. After DFO Sanjit Kumar assured them of compensation, they agreed not to obstruct the elephants’ movement.
