After spreading terror in Manco gram panchayat of Sundargarh district, tusker herds are on a rampage in Birkera gram panchayat under the lathikata block in the district.
The villagers of Birkera, Jodakudar and Buchahanda are having sleepless nights as a six-member elephant herd, including a calf, has been roaming in their locality. The heard has already trampled several houses and devoured food grains in last few days. Sources said a woman narrowly escaped when the elephant herd suddenly attacked her house at Birkera village. The Forest officials along with Birkera Sarpanch Mahesh Nag visited the spot to ascertain the loss.
The villagers are not only scared by the jumbos, but the growth in the incidence of jumbo attack due to inaction of the Forest Department has become a cause of concern.
